Now fires are in the forecast thanks to a major weather warmup that will begin this week with temperatures Friday in the vicinity of 100 degrees.
Snow runoff in May and heavy rain in June that caused rivers and streams to flood has delayed the wildfire season, said Mike Richmond, a meteorologist with Predictive Services of the Northern Rockies Coordination Center, which coordinates fire resources in the region, said Tuesday.
By this time 2017, when 1.4 million acres eventually burned in Montana, the largest fire season in recorded history, significant fires already were burning across the state in late June.
