Nearly every ocean and sea in the world contains a similar patch of floating debris. Illegal dumping and improper waste management of plastics is filling the world’s bays, estuaries, inlets and beaches. In June 2017, the United Nations Ocean Conference estimated that by 2050 the oceans might contain more weight in plastics than they do in fish.
Sobering statistics like these inspired a group of environmentally concerned residents in the landlocked Montana city of Lewistown to form ROWL – Recycle Our Waste Lewistown – a non-profit organization dedicated to recycling as much of the city’s plastic waste as possible.
“You just feel, how can I help to control this?” said ROWL volunteer Rosemary Kent. “What can I personally do to try and have an impact.”
