A new wind farm is coming to the Great Falls area, and Montana Public Service Commission Vice Chairman Travis Kavulla says, “It may be the lowest cost resource in all of Montana, with prices in the low $20s/MWh.”

ALLETE Clean Energy’s new 80-megawatt wind farm will supply NorthWestern Energy.

Public Service Commissioner Travis Kavulla said his understanding is that the wind farm will be at Spion Kop, adjacent to the wind farm NorthWestern owns seven miles northeast of Raynesford.

The project likely means 40 new wind turbines along the Highwood Mountains.

Electric Lights & Power reported the project will use GE wind turbines. The company qualified for federal renewable energy production tax credits by using wind turbines purchased in 2016.

The wind farm is expected to be online in late 2019.
