Tailings waste from the Butte Hill Superfund cleanup could land on Montana Resources property, said a federal official.

Nikia Greene, Environmental Protection Agency project manager, said sending the waste that will be excavated from the areas along Casey and George Streets and around Slag Wall Canyon to the active mine site is an option being considered. Greene called it “ideal.”

One major reason is safety. Transporting 600,000 cubic yards of old mine and smelter waste to MR would prevent the need for thousands of truckloads moving around Butte. Greene said railroad spurs could potentially be built to each of the excavation areas and the material could be sent via rail.
