Colstrip shuts down, and utilities easily adjust

The coal-fired Colstrip Power Plant in eastern Montana, one of the largest electricity generators in the West, has been shut down for at least a month because two of the plant’s generators were emitting air pollutants, including lead, cadmium, and chromium, at unsafe levels. Without Colstrip electricity, utilities are buying electricity on the spot market and doing so without interruption—sometimes at lower prices.
