The Berkeley Pit’s toxic water could be reduced to late 1990s levels within the pit according to a new Atlantic Richfield Company plan, says Mark Thompson, Montana Resources vice president of environmental affairs.

Atlantic Richfield has proposed to the Environmental Protection Agency, and to MR, to build a second water treatment plant right off Shields Avenue that would have greater capacity and draw down the pit’s water levels by somewhere between 50 feet and 150 feet, Thompson said Tuesday.
