The ideal candidate for the Bluewater Springs Hatchery manager position should possess and show the management and supervisory skills necessary to operate a large multi-species facility in a productive and positive manner. The candidate will be able to direct the activities of subordinates, and schedule and supervise all fish culture and stocking activities of the facility effectively, efficiently and safely. The incumbent will also provide and perform skilled and technical fish culture techniques and monitor fish production programs for several fish culture parameters. These include but are not limited to: spawning protocols, fish growth, rearing densities, flow indexes, water quality and fish health. The candidate should be open- minded to the opinions, thoughts, ideas, and feelings of those that work with or for them. The ideal candidate must determine, acknowledge and then rectify conflicts in the hatchery in a concise, yet respectful manner while, following department procedures.

Performs task outside of regular duties such as working at other hatcheries (helping with spawning or stocking), spawning wild brood stocks, and performing various public relation activities (tours, kids fishing day, presentations, school activities).

 

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Aquaculture, Biology, Fisheries, Environmental Sciences, Zoology, Wildlife, or closely related field and at least 5 years of Fish Culture experience. Additional consideration is given to those with supervisory experience and experience at hatcheries with complex fish programs, fish health (disease) issues, or hatchery infrastructure. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
