We are looking for an enthusiastic Environmental Scientist (Scientist) to serve as a permitting, compliance, hydrology, and reclamation specialist in the administration of the Metal Mine Reclamation Act and the Montana Environmental Policy Act. The Scientist responsibilities may include: 1) reviewing permit applications, annual reports, monitoring reports, and other information to determine whether mining proposals and actions are hydrologically sound and consistent with statutes and rules; 2) writing and/or reviewing environmental review documents to ensure that the information is complete, accurate, and easily understood; 3) conducting inspections that are thorough and complete; 4) writing inspection reports and other correspondence that is complete, accurate, well-written, and easily understood; 5) evaluating reclamation activities to determine if the resulting reclamation is consistent with the approved reclamation plan; 6) determining if/when it is appropriate to release bond for completed reclamation; and 7) analyzing hydrologic information to ensure that mining proposals and mining activity comply with the Metal Mine Reclamation Act.
This position requires working in both field and office environments. Field season typically runs from approximately mid-May through mid-October, in which travel is approximately 25% of the time. During the remainder of the year travel is required approximately 10-15% of the time. Field work involves hiking on uneven ground and steep slopes. Some field work may require duties below or near the edge of high-walls, inspecting underground mines, and spending time around large equipment. The successful candidate will be required to travel throughout the state, often times unaccompanied. Long work days will occasionally be necessary. The Scientist will be required to have a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in hydrology, geology, or a related field of science or technology and one year of job related experience.
