We are looking for a customer service oriented Environmental Science Specialist (Specialist) with attention to details.  At the Department of Environmental Quality, we are striving to make our work environment a supportive and fun environment that fosters a work/life balance.

Ensuring the proper disposal of solid waste, the Specialist provides oversight for solid waste management systems and facilities.  Responsibilities include assisting owners and operators of solid waste facilities and septic tanks pumpers with ongoing compliance issues; reviewing and approving system design and operation plans for proposed and existing facilities; corrective action responsibilities such as investigating facilities for human health and ecological risk assessments; and reviewing and monitoring changes to legislation and policies.  Other duties may include coordinating completion of compliance, regulatory, public outreach and presenting at other events.

The Specialist travel extensively throughout Montana especially April through November.  Field work may involve occasionally working long days, and physically demanding tasks such as long hikes in adverse weather conditions and walking on uneven surfaces.

Qualifications: 

Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree with emphasis in biological or physical sciences, engineering, chemistry or a related field and 2 years of experience in environmental protection or waste management.

 Other combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
