The Madison Conservation District (MCD) was established in 1946 to provide local support to natural resource
conservation needs throughout Madison County. The MCD serves an area of 1.1 million acres, and focuses on private lands conservation. The mission of the Madison Conservation District is to promote a sustainable, productive and healthy environment through locally-led conservation efforts, and our vision is: A healthy landscape that supports thriving communities, productive agriculture, and sustainable fish and wildlife populations. We do this through collaboration and coordination with local, state, and national partners to achieve common sense conservation.
The Conservation Resource Coordinator will fulfill a diverse set of roles for the Madison Conservation District. This position plays a critical role in the MCD team, supporting conservation initiatives, outreach efforts, and administrative functions that help implement the organization’s strategic plan. The Conservation Resource Coordinator will work with local, regional, and state partners to implement monitoring plans, and also provides administrative support to landowners seeking 310 Permits (Montana’s Natural Streambed & Land Preservation Act). Additionally, this position will be responsible for executing outreach initiatives to communicate work of the MCD to partners and stakeholders.
Work Environment: This position requires some field work, but daily operations are based out of the MCD office. The Conservation Resource Coordinator will work an average of 40 hours per week, but is expected to work flexible hours when needed. Monthly Madison Conservation District board meeting attendance will be required. Occasional travel and attendance for other meetings, trainings, and conferences is required.
Duties & Responsibilities
Resource Monitoring & Technical Assistance ~50%
Develop and implement conservation management plans for range, water, wildlife and soil resources.
Securing funding for conservation initiatives and monitoring efforts.
Assisting and/or managing the Madison Stream Team, a citizen science water monitoring program working with volunteers and landowners to monitor trends in stream health.
Analyzing and managing datasets and creating technical reports.
Communication & Outreach ~25%
Organizing education and outreach events that support conservation priorities of the MCD.
Developing and implementing outreach strategies to communicate with stakeholders, partners, and community
Providing assistance in the maintenance and updating of the MCD website, social media platforms, and
Administrative Duties ~15%
Providing assistance to landowners and applicants in the 310 permitting process (Montana’s Natural Streambed
& Land Preservation Act)
Managing administrative components of 310 permitting process.
Assisting in the preparation of monthly MCD meetings, and recording/distributing meeting minutes and
maintaining MCD records.
Providing fundraising and reporting assistance for MCD operational needs.
Other Duties ~10%
Representing MCD in local, regional, and state partnerships
Office staffing and public point of contact for the MCD.
Responsible for other duties as assigned by MCD Board of Supervisors
The ideal candidate is flexible and self-starting, and provides a strong sense of customer service to landowners and
partners. Maintaining and building partnerships is a priority, and this position requires strong communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications Include:
(Associates or Bachelor’s Degree) in resource management, range management, conservation, hydrology, or
some related field.
Experience conducting field work, including rangeland monitoring, water and streamflow measurements.
Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
Computer and technical skills, including ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, Word Press, Excel, and social media platforms
Preferred Qualifications Include:
Minimum 2 years of experience in natural resource management or conservation field
Experience in community outreach and communications
Experience conducting natural resource education and outreach initiatives
Knowledge and experience with Montana’s Natural Streambed and Land Preservation Act (310 Law)
Compensation: Salary of $32,000 – $36,000 annually DOE.
Paid sick and annual leave – 96 hours of annual sick leave, and 120 hours of annual vacation leave
Holidays – paid holidays recognized by the State of Montana
Medical – a medical stipend of $250/month
Retirement – eligible for Montana Public Employee Retirement with employer match
