Big Spring Creek Watershed

County: Fergus

Sub-Major Basin: Middle Missouri

Affected Watershed: Judith

Watershed Description: Big Spring Creek Watershed originates on the North slopes of the Big Snowy Mountains. Big Spring Creek begins as one of the largest Fresh Water Spring 7 miles South of Lewistown and flows for 31 miles into the Judith River.

Why was a watershed effort begun? The project was begun by 7th Grade Science Students for Lewistown Junior High, in cooperation with state and local officials.

Group Accomplishments: A major stream restoration project plan was started in the early 1990's. Water was turned into the new stream bed on 9/11/2000. Trails and new fishing sites were part of the restoration project.

Group Plans: Continue to develope trails and add parks to the area. We are now using GPS Technology and mapping the watershed and areas of concern.

Biggest Challenge: Our biggest challenge has been to find funding for the many projects. PCB's were also found in the watershed, but are being cleaned up.

Additional Comments: 2010 will be our 28th year of measuring water quality on Little Casino Creek and 18th year with Big Spring Creek. Over 3500 7th Grade Students have participated with the projects over the years.
