Clark Fork Watershed Education Program

County: Deer Lodge, Granite, Missoula, Powell, Silver Bow

Sub-Major Basin: Upper Clark Fork

Affected Watershed: Blackfoot, Flint - Rock, Upper Clark Fork

Watershed Description: This education program is located within the Clark Fork Basin Superfund area. CFWEP reaches middle and high schools in communities along the mainstem of the Clark Fork River and all tributaries above Milltown dam, including the Rock Creek, Flint Creek, Big Blackfoot, and Little Blackfoot Rivers.

Why was a watershed effort begun? Over the next few decades, hundreds of millions of dollars will be spent on restoring the Upper Clark Fork to a fully functioning watershed. Our goal is to ensure that students in the watershed are an integral, dynamic part of this process. To begin, students must have the scientific background necessary to understand how watershed health is assessed. We will provide this, with the help of professionals working within the basin. Through our program, school children will have the opportunity to collect a variety of scientific data at all stages of restoration, and to make that data available to the public. We believe a basin-wide children’s education program will also foster future good stewards of the Clark Fork watershed.

Group Accomplishments: A sucessful pilot program was run in Butte during the 2003-2004 academic year, and in December 2004 we received NRDP funding to fully implement the program from 2005 to 2008. School offerings began in April 2005.

Group Plans: Within the scope of our current funding we will run annual field trips and classroom activities in 31 schools between Butte and Bonner. Our ultimate goal is to ensure the continuation of the program beyond the end of 2007, and to keep students active and involved throughout the decades over which the Upper Clark Fork watershed overgoes fundamental changes.

Biggest Challenge: Until now, our biggest challenge has been coordinating with all the scientists, engineers and public and private groups that are working within the Upper Clark Fork basin.

Additional Comments: We invite all scientists and engineers working within the Upper Clark Fork basin to contact us and see how they can work directly with teachers and students. We invite all teachers within the Upper Clark Fork basin to contact us to see how our program can enhance your classroom offerings.
